Windows XP Service Pack 2 has a built in firewall that is enabled by default.

LAST MODIFIED DATE: August 18, 2004

VERSION: This applies to Exceed version 8.0+

PROBLEM:

When using the Hummingbird Connectivity products on Windows XP Service Pack 2 to establish a connection to the host through Rexec, Rlogin, FTP, Telnet, Inetd,...etc, the connection fails because of the default firewall setting.

SOLUTION:

Windows XP Service Pack 2 has the firewall setting enabled by default so that it blocks all connections to your computer. In order to make the Hummingbird Connectivity products work with Windows XP Service Pack 2, you need to either disable the firewall or add the ports that you require to use to the list of exceptions.

When you try to bring up an Xapplication on Windows XP Service Pack 2 using Xstart with start method of "Rexec" or "Rlogin" for example, you will get the following message:

"Do you want to keep blocking this program?"

Your options are: Keep Blocking, Unblock or Ask me later.

If you would like to display the Xapplication on your screen, you would need to select the "Unblock" option, this option will add the "Xserver for win32" port to the exception list and will allow you to run Xapplications.

You can find out if the "Xserver for win32" port has been added to the exception list by doing the following:

  1. Go to "Control Panel"
  2. Go to the "Security Center" folder.
  3. Select the "Windows Firewall" option.
  4. Select the "Exceptions" tab.
  5. You should find a list of exceptions and "Xserver for win32" should be on that list, and it should be checked meaning that it is enabled.

Depending on what method you are using to connect to the host you may also need to add the specific port for that method onto the list of exceptions. For example, if you are using telnet you may need to add TCP port 23 on the list of exceptions, if you are using ftp you may need to add TCP port 21 to the list of exceptions.

To Add ports, click on the "Add Port..." button under the "Windows Firewall", "Exceptions" tab. Type in a name for this port, and under the port number type in the port number you want to add to the exception list. Select the TCP or UDP radio button and select OK.
