Adding custom fonts to an Exceed installation on Windows NT 4.0, 2000, 2003 Terminal Server.

LAST MODIFIED DATE: June 10, 2004

VERSION: This applies to Exceed version 9.0+

PROBLEM:

The user would like to install Exceed on his Windows Terminal Server machine, and give the users the fonts they will need to run the company's application properly. He has been able to add the fonts into a local install using Sconfig, but can't get the fonts working so the Clients of the Terminal Server get the fonts.

SOLUTION:

To add fonts to a Terminal Server installation so that all the users get the required fonts, you will need to perform the following steps:

Note: First, you will need to place all the fonts you want to add in a directory on your PC. e.g. CustomFont

  1. Create a "normal" Admin install for terminal server. You will not need Sconfig in this process. So just go through the installation GUI, and select Administrative Installation for Terminal Services.

  2. After you have the Admin directory created, run setup from that Admin directory as the local Administrator on the Terminal Server console.

  3. Once installation is complete, login as the local Admin and run Xconfig > Font Management > Click Edit under lfp.xdb

    - Click Add Font Directory
    - Browse for CustomFont directory that was created in "Note" before step 1, the rest of the fields will be filled in for you.
    - Set the Status to Keep, click OK and a window will pop up letting you know that the font list file has been updated. Click OK on this window to go back to the Font Database window.
    - Double click on the added CustomFont to view your font list (it should list the fonts contained in your CustomFont directory. Try viewing the fonts by clicking the "View Font" button.
    - Click OK when done. The default path to the created .FDB file can be found under ~\Administrator\Application Data\Hummingbird\Connectivity\9.00\Exceed.

  4. Go to your Admin Directory and create a folder called exceed (all lower case). Under this new exceed directory create another directory called exceed (all lower case). In this second exceed directory copy both the CustomFont.fdb and the lfp.xdb files from the ~\ Administrator\Application Data\Hummingbird\Connectivity\9.00\Exceed folder.

  5. Run the usrmanager.exe located in WINNT\system32\Hummingbird\Connectivity directory.

  6. Click the Properties button. Click the Overrides tab. Click Add. This will open the Determine Override Information window.

  7. Click the drop down arrow next to Name. Select CustomUserDirectoryList. For Value enter exceed (all lower case). Click OK

  8. Click Add again. This time for Name enter Exceed.Xserver.KeepLfpXdb (you will have to type this in it is not in the drop down list). For Value enter 1. Click OK.

  9. If users have already logged in to the Terminal Server before and have Exceed installed, go to the Options Tab on the Managed Product Properties window. Increase the Product Level to the next highest number. If its 1 make it 2, if its 5 make it 6, etc... Click OK

  10. Log off as Administrator and login as a user. Check Xconfig > Font Management, the fonts should be there.

At this point you are finished and all the users should get the required fonts to run the application without any problems.
