Exceed - Applying Hostexplorer patches to an Administrative Install on a Windows Terminal Server
DISCUSSION:

When attempting to apply a Hostexplorer patch to an Administrative Install on a Windows Terminal Server, the customer gets the following errors:

Error 1328. Error applying patch to file c:\config.msi\pt239c.tmp...

Error 1308. Source file not found: c:\program files\hummingbird\connectivity\7.00\hostexplorer\hemcnv32.nls.eng

RESOLUTION:

In order to apply the Hostexplorer patch or any official patch, the following steps must be performed:

  1. Rename the current c:\admin directory that was originally patched using the Exceed v7.0 TSE patch to c:\admin.tse

  2. Build a new or "clean" c:\admin Administrative Exceed 7.0 image from the Exceed 7.0 installation CD.

  3. Replace the "Hummingbird Exceed.msi" file in the c:\admin directory with the "Hummingbird Exceed.msi" from the c:\admin.tse directory

Copy all usr*.* file(s) in the c:\admin.tse\system32\hummingbird\connectivity directory to the c:\admin\system32\hummingbird\connectivity directory

Replace the hostex directory in c:\admin\application data\hummingbird\connectivity\7.00\ with the hostex directory from the c:\admin.tse\application data\hummingbird\connectivity\7.00\ directory

  4. Apply the Hostexplorer patch
Basically, the reason why these errors occur is that the Exceed v7.0 Terminal Server patch, updates certain files in the original administrative image to a newer build. Hence, when the Hostexplorer patch is run it sees that these certain files have been updated and therefore thinks that Exceed has already been patched which then results in the error messages.

In the solution above, Step 3 allows us to get around this by combining the original(unpatched) administrative image files with the TSE patched "Hummingbird Exceed.msi", the TSE patched "Hostex" directory and the usr*.* files (ie. usrsetup.exe).
