The same procedure applies when installing Exceed on a WTS that has the CITRIX METAFRAME software installed.
The installation of Exceed will require at least one reboot of the WTS Machine in order to update the registry and install Exceed properly. Make sure that no users are connected to the WTS during the installation of Exceed and that no Applications are running. It is recommended that the Administrator performing the installation of Exceed on the WTS Machine be logged on at the WTS Console as the Local Administrator. (as opposed to the Domain Administrator or a regular User). Do not put the Windows Terminal Server Machine in Install Mode. Leave the WTS in Execute Mode (the normal mode for the WTS machine to run applications).
Run the setup from the Exceed CD or from whatever location you have placed the Exceed installation Files .
When you get to the setup section that asks you what type of installation you want, select the following; Administrative > Custom. Choose the Path and directory where you would like to install Exceed or click Next in order to select the default Path; Drive:\Program Files\Exceed.nt
- Select the Exceed components your users will need and select the fonts your users will require. Keep in mind that users will have different resolutions for their WTS sessions and therefore some will require bigger or smaller fonts depending on the resolution. (You should have 75dpi and 100dpi along with misc, hpfonts and Dec).
- Once the installation of the Exceed components and fonts is completed, close all windows .Go to the Start button > Run > click on the Browse button and find where the Exceed.nt\userins directory is.
Run the setup.exe to install the user files for the Administrator.
- When you run the setup for the user files as the Admin you will be asked for the location of the Home Directory . Do not change the path that appears. (This is where all the Exceed executables are located).
- When setup asks you for the User Directory, select a directory where you are the only one that has
write permissions like your own Profile directory. Examples:
Home Dir > C:\Program Files\Exceed.nt < All the Exceed executables >
User Dir > C:\wtsrv\profiles\administrator\personal\Exceed.62 <user files for the Admin>The other choices you will have to make through the rest of the user installation are entirely at your discretion. For Example, Password for the Xconfig, Create shortcuts on the desktop, Tune the Xserver etc.
- Once the user installation for the administrator is finished, reboot the machine (this will be the only time you need to reboot) and log on as the administrator once again. Before proceeding any further, please contact Hummingbird Technical Support for the following patches (Xconfig.exe and UsrSetup.exe). Once the patches are obtained, please copy the UsrSetup.exe to wtsrv\system32\hummbird and Xconfig.exe to Exceed's home directory.
- Find the override.ini file located within the Exceed.nt\userins directory.
This file is used to customize options for all users that will require installing Exceed on the WTS.
This file contains a brief explanation of how it can be used to customize user installations.
Here is a sample of the settings that you are likely to need in order to install the Exceed User files for all users:
[*] < this defines the Any User Section in the override.ini DestinationPath = %[USERPROFILE]\Exceed.62 < where user files will install for every user. Exceed.StaticDisplayNumber = 0 < will set the Display to Dynamic.
NOTE:
In our test WTS machine we have the environment variable USERPROFILE set to the following ; USERPROFILE=C:\WTSRV\Profiles\USERNAME If I were to type set at a DOS window in the TSE when I'm logged on as myself, I would get the following value for the USERPROFILE environment: USERPROFILE=C:\WTSRV\Profiles\"name of user that is currently logged on" - Once you have made the changes to the override.ini, save the file.
Go to the User Manager For Domains on the WTS machine and create a group called Exceed_Users.
Add the user accounts of the individuals that require access to Exceed. The Exceed_Users group can also be created in a Primary Domain Controler, in this case you will have to add the Domain accounts that require access to Exceed.
The Exceed_Users group can only exist in one location either the WTS or the PDC but not both.
- Next time one of those users that is a member of the Exceed_Users group logs on to the WTS machine, he/she should see a small window in the upper left corner of the screen that shows the progress of the user file installation for Exceed. There is no user input required.
If you want to uninstall the Exceed files from one of the individuals that installed Exceed, simply remove his/her user account from the Exceed_Users group. The next time the user logs on, Exceed will uninstall itself automatically for that particular user only.
NOTE:
If you run into any problems when doing a user installation, take a look at the usrsetup.log file that gets written to the temp directory. It should tell you what went wrong and at what point when trying to install the Exceed user files for a specific User.You should do a search for that file since WTS creates subdirectories within the temp directory for each user that logs on to the WTS machine. If you can't find the usrsetup.log file, make sure you refresh your Windows Terminal Server session and that everyone has read and write permissions to the temp directory. Inetd and Lpr: At this time both components do not work properly from the WTS Client PC. They do however work properly at the WTS Console.
Dynamic Display number: Exceed detects other instances of itself running and it automatically and transparently assigns the next available display number to any subsequent user that launches Exceed on the WTS machine. The display number that has been assigned dynamically to a user is not written to any file or to the registry but instead is kept in memory.
Static Display number: Exceed will assign a Static Display Number to each user that installs Exceed and that number will be incremented automatically to each subsequent user that installs Exceed. The number will be unique to each user and will also be read only so that no user can change it. The assignment of a static display number to an Exceed user is kept in the windows registry, it is Not supported or recommended to manually change the display for a specific user through the registry editor.
You can copy from this document the following sample entries to the bottom of your override.ini file.
[*]
DestinationPath = %[USERPROFILE]\Exceed.62
Exceed.StaticDisplayNumber = 0
Keep in mind that depending on how your USERPROFILE environment variable is configured you may not need a \ (slash) between %[USERPROFILE] and the directory where the user files will be installed to. When you set the Exceed.StaticDisplayNumber to 0 (zero) you turn DynamicDisplay on and Static off.
